Ausiello confirmed that we haven’t seen the last of Chase just yet!
Question: Any scoop on Arrow? —Anita
Ausiello: We haven’t seen the last of Thea’s DJ-boytoy, played by Austin Butler. “Like a lot of our characters, there’s maybe a little bit more to him than meets the eye,” exec producer Greg Berlanti teases. And will her papa Malcolm Merlyn have a take on the new guy in his daughter’s life? Says Berlanti with a laugh: “It would be surprising if he didn’t.”
Austin Butler is trading his “Carrie Diaries” leather jacket for a pair of elf ears to star in “Shannara,” MTV’s new fantasy series, Variety confirmed Monday.
Based on the sprawling book series by Terry Brooks, “Shannara” will follow Butler as Wil Ohmsford, who is half elf. When he learns that he is the last of the magical Shannara family, he must set out to find the Druid who holds the key to his future. “Shannara” takes place centuries after Earth’s current civilization destroyed itself in a nuclear holocaust. MTV’s take on the saga will begin with the second book in the series, “The Elfstones of Shannara.”
MTV ordered 10 episodes of the series in July, hoping to establish a “Lord of the Rings”-type franchise for the network. Brooks’ novels have undergone many attempts at Hollywood development since “The Sword of Shannara,” the first in the series, was published in the late 1970s.
Jonathan Liebesman (“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”) is set to direct the first two episodes alongside showrunners Miles Millar and Al Gough (“Smallville”).
Since his turn as Sebastian on “The Carrie Diaries,” Butler has appeared on the CW’s “Arrow.” He can next be seen in Kevin Smith’s “Yoga Hosers” opposite Johnny Depp.
Butler is repped by WME and Anonymous Content.
The news of Butler’s casting was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to Austin during this time.
Our thoughts are with Austin Butler during this tough time.
The 23-year-old actor revealed earlier today that his mother, Lori Butler, passed away, but didn’t discuss the cause of death.
“Lori Butler, my mom, my hero, & my best friend passed away this morning. Lets all celebrate her. I love you and will miss you every day Mom,” Butler’s emotional tweet read.
Gina Hudgens, Vanessa Hudgens‘ mom, also tweeted her sympathies, writing, “Lori, RIP. You’ll be forever alive in our hearts & mind. You’ll always be our angel in heaven watching over us. U will be missed!”
Prior to the tragic news, the young star was keeping busy with his multiple projects. Butler was spotted rocking a ponytail as he got ready to film a scene for his upcoming movie Yoga Hosers on Wednesday afternoon in Los Angeles.
The film co-stars Johnny Depp, his daughter Lily-Rose Depp and fellow father-daughter duo Kevin Smith and Harley Quinn Smith. Yoga Hosers is Smith’s follow-up to Tusk, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this month, and is the second installment in his True North trilogy of movies that involve Canadian myths and culture.
Additionally, Butler has landed a major recurring role on the CW’s Arrow. The young TV star, who was last seen wooing Carrie Bradshaw on the network’s shortlived (but critically adored) Sex and the City prequel series The Carrie Diaries, is set to play Chase, a charismatic DJ whose talent and wiles will catch the attention of Thea (Willa Holland).
